An EORI number is the customs identification number used to recognise a business when goods move across customs borders. If you import, export, lodge customs declarations, or apply for certain customs decisions, you may need one before your shipment can move. Without the right EORI details, goods can be delayed, declarations can be rejected, and communication with customs systems becomes harder than it needs to be.

Below, you will find the practical answers most businesses need: what an EORI number means, who needs it, how it differs from a VAT number, and how to apply correctly.

01

What an EORI number is

EORI stands for Economic Operators Registration and Identification. It is a unique customs number used by customs authorities to identify businesses and other economic operators. You may also see it called an EORI code, EORI no, or EORI nr, but the meaning is the same.

In the EU, an EORI number is issued by a national customs authority and then used across EU customs processes. It does not replace your commercial documents, HS classification, import duties, VAT obligations, licences, or permits. It simply gives customs a standard way to identify the party involved in the shipment or customs procedure, which may include the importer of record.

02

Who needs an EORI number

You generally need an EORI number if your business is involved in customs activity connected to imported or exported goods. This applies to established importers and exporters, but also to other operators dealing directly with customs.

  • Businesses importing goods into the EU or exporting goods out of the EU
  • Companies lodging customs declarations or safety and security filings, whether in-house or through customs brokerage
  • Businesses applying for customs decisions or authorisations
  • Operators using customs procedures such as transit, warehousing, or temporary admission

If your goods move between the EU and the UK, or involve Northern Ireland, the required number can depend on the route and the customs territory involved. The safest rule is simple: if customs needs to identify your business, check the EORI requirement before the cargo is booked.

03

What an EORI number is used for

An EORI number is used throughout import and export customs clearance. It appears in import and export declarations, customs communication systems, applications for certain customs decisions, and other official customs processes. In practical terms, it helps customs link the shipment, the declaration, and the responsible business.

For traders, the main benefit is operational clarity. The right EORI details help prevent avoidable mismatches in customs clearance documents, rejected filings, and delays at the border. It is one of the first pieces of customs data that should be confirmed before a shipment moves.

A VAT number and an EORI number are not the same. Some numbers may be connected in format, but you should never assume your VAT registration automatically covers customs identification.

04

How to apply for an EORI number

The application process is usually handled online through the customs authority of the relevant country. Exact steps vary, but the process is normally straightforward if your business information is ready.

  1. Confirm which customs territory requires the number, such as an EU member state, Great Britain, or Northern Ireland.
  2. Prepare your business details, including legal company name, registered address, tax or VAT number where relevant, registration details, and contact information.
  3. Complete the official EORI application form on the customs portal.
  4. Submit the application and any supporting details requested by the authority.
  5. Wait for review and issuance of the number before filing customs declarations.

Processing time depends on the country and the quality of the information submitted. In many cases it takes a few business days, but it can take longer if details are incomplete or do not match official records. In several jurisdictions the registration itself is free, but you should always check the current local rules.

05

EU, GB and XI EORI numbers

Not every EORI number serves the same customs territory. An EU EORI number is used for customs activity in the EU and is issued by an EU member state. A GB EORI number is used for customs activity involving Great Britain. An XI EORI number may be required for certain movements connected with Northern Ireland.

Most businesses should think about this by trade lane, not by label. If you only operate in EU customs procedures, focus on the EU requirement. If you also move goods to or from Great Britain or Northern Ireland, check whether an additional GB or XI registration is needed for that route.

06

Checking and updating an EORI number

Some customs systems allow limited EORI validation, but public access to full registration data is restricted. In many cases, a lookup only confirms whether a number is valid for customs use. It does not provide full company data, and you cannot reliably derive an EORI number from a VAT number alone.

Once issued, your EORI details should stay accurate. If your legal name, address, or registration data changes, update the record with the issuing authority. Outdated data can create customs issues at exactly the wrong moment.

FAQ about EORI numbers

What happens if I do not have an EORI number?

If your shipment needs one and you do not have it, customs declarations may be blocked, delayed, or rejected. That can lead to extra storage time, missed delivery windows, and unnecessary operational pressure.

Is an EORI number the same as a VAT number?

No. A VAT number is for tax administration, while an EORI number is for customs identification. A business involved in cross-border goods movements may need both.

Can I have more than one EORI number?

Within the EU, a business should normally have one EU EORI number that is valid across EU customs activity. However, if you also trade with the UK, you may additionally need a GB or XI number depending on the movement.

Can I find an EORI number from a VAT number?

Not reliably. There is no simple rule that lets you convert a VAT number into an EORI number. If you need to verify one, use the relevant customs validation route where available.

How long is an EORI number valid?

An EORI number does not usually expire on a fixed short-term basis, but it must remain linked to correct business information. If your company details change, update the record so customs systems continue to recognise it properly.
